Identification:

The largest heron with a massive, heavy bill. Chestnut head. It has blackish legs.

Habitat:

Slow-flowing rivers, lakes and swamps, also estuaries, mangroves and mudflats

Behaviour:

It is a nomad to lakes, dams, large rivers and estuaries where there are extensive reed beds.

Diet:

Mainly fish but also frogs, reptiles and small mammals.

Breeding:

Breeds singly or in small colonies in trees or reeds.
